(Viviparus viviparus)

Are UK trapdoor snails suitable for outdoor ponds?

Yes. UK trapdoor snails are fully cold-tolerant and well suited to outdoor garden and wildlife ponds.

Do trapdoor snails survive winter?

Yes. Trapdoor snails naturally overwinter by reducing activity during colder months. This is normal behaviour.

Will trapdoor snails overpopulate my pond?

No. Trapdoor snails are slow breeding and population levels are naturally limited by food availability and pond conditions.

Do trapdoor snails clean algae?

Trapdoor snails contribute to natural grazing and organic waste processing, but they are not a guaranteed algae solution.

UK GREATER RAMSHORN SNAILS FAQs

(Planorbarius corneus)

Are UK greater ramshorn snails native?

Yes. UK greater ramshorn snails are native to British ponds and wetlands.

Are ramshorn snails active all year?

No. Ramshorn snails are most active during warmer months and reduce activity significantly during winter.

Will ramshorn snails breed quickly?

Breeding is dependent on food availability and temperature. In balanced ponds, population levels are self-regulating.

Are ramshorn snails safe for wildlife ponds?

Yes. When stocked responsibly, they are suitable for wildlife ponds and coexist with native species.

SWAN MUSSELS FAQs

(Anodonta cygnea)

Are swan mussels suitable for all ponds?

No. Swan mussels require mature, established ponds with sufficient volume and stable conditions. They are not suitable for small or newly established ponds.

Do swan mussels filter pond water?

Swan mussels are filter feeders and may contribute to water clarity over time, but results vary and are not guaranteed.

How long do swan mussels live?

Swan mussels are long-lived animals and should be purchased with long-term responsibility in mind.

Can swan mussels be kept alone?

Swan mussels are supplied in minimum quantities to support welfare and natural behaviour. Single specimens are not sold.
